Go Go Green with the Dog
12 05 2010Dogs may not be immediately concerned with saving the earth but today’s dog owners should find themselves engaging in “Green Responsibility” and choosing biodegradable/eco-friendly pet products.

Going green isn’t just for people. Dogs as well as dog owners can help protect the environment we all share. With health concerns like cancer and environmental issues such as pollution, climate change, global warming, land degradation, ozone depletion, resource depletion, and waste disposal plaguing the earth, concerned citizens are making the effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Many of these concerned citizens are dog owners.
According to the American Pet Product Manufacturers Association, there were 74.8 million dogs listed in the National Pet Owners Survey of 2008-2009. That many dogs can make a significant impact on the environment. It only makes sense that pet owners include their furry family members in lifestyle changes that protect health and the planet we live on. A few tips can have dogs happily going green.
- Have pets spayed or neutered. Pet overpopulation takes up valuable resources and contributes to pollution.
- Adopt pets from a shelter. Those who want a specific breed can find just what they’re looking for at a breed rescue.
- Pick up after the dog, using paper or biodegradable poop bags. Never use plastic which does not break down in the landfill.
- Feed dogs organic pet food that is free of hormones and chemicals that may be toxic to the canine body.
- Recycle household materials for bedding. Some of the family’s old blankets or towels work well as do old pillow slips stuffed with foam packaging peanuts.
- Pay attention to packaging of pet items. Recycled, biodegradable, or none is best.
- Use shampoos and other grooming products that are free of phosphates, sulfates, and other chemicals that can be harmful to the environment.
While many dog owners are responsible, many still do not clear up their dog’s mess which can be a problem to others. When the shear numbers of dogs are taken into account, we can see the potential scale of the problem in various regions:
- 4 million tons – It is estimated that dog owners do not collect over 4 million tons of dog waste annually.
- There are an estimated 66 million dogs in the USA
Reasons to pick it up? Let’s see below:
“I don’t understand why people don’t pick up their own dog’s poop. It’s not right! In order to have a clean park for you, your pet and other community members to enjoy, it needs to be clean! You should always pick up your dog’s poop, especially when poop bags are readily available at the park.”—-quote from a responsible pet owner
1. For reasons of good hygiene, risks to human health and to comply with many laws related to dog fowling.
2. Many world Governments are reducing the use of plastic bags as they can be harmful to the environment. As a result, many shops and retailers no longer provide free plastic bags, and some companies charge money for plastic bags.
3. 20-30% of all pollutants in waterways attributed to dog waste – Pollutants originating from rainwater run-off via sewer systems, and dogs pooping near watersheds or
beaches. Overall, it is believed dog waste is third or fourth on the list of contributors to bacteria in contaminated waters.
4. 4th highest generated waste – Plastics are the fourth highest generated waste in the U.S., originate from petroleum which is non-renewable, do not biodegrade, and take hundred of years to break down naturally.
5. Plastics are the least recycled with a 6.9% recovery rate. In 2006, the U.S. produced 29.5 million tons of plastic and only recycled 2.04 tons.
Above are already quite a few reasons why you should use dog poop bag (it is even better to use biodegradable ones)

RESPONSE TO THE LOUGHBOROUGH REPORT ON OXO-DEGRADABLE PLASTICS FROM SYMPHONY ENVIRONMENTAL
23 04 2010Symphony Environmental defends oxo-degradable plastics
On 11th March the Department for the Environment and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) of the UK Government published a Report from Loughborough University entitled “Assessing the Environmental Impacts of Oxo-degradable Plastics Across their Life-cycle.”
A detailed response has been prepared by Symphony Environmental Technologies, a British public company quoted on the London Stock Exchange, developing and supplying Oxo-biodegradable plastic technology under its d2w trademark. The Loughborough Report has confirmed that oxo-biodegradable plastics:
* DO DEGRADE ABIOTICALLY IN A NORMAL ENVIRONMENT
* DO DEGRADE ABIOTICALLY UNDER ELEVATED TEMPERATURES IN LANDFILL
* DO BIODEGRADE
* DO NOT EMIT METHANE EVEN DEEP IN LANDFILL
* ARE SAFE FOR FOOD CONTACT
* CONTAIN NO HEAVY METALS
The report has also confirmed that:
* PRO-DEGRADANT ADDITIVES ARE NOT HARMFUL AND HAVE NO NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT IN THE PRODUCTION AND USE PHASE
* THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF BIO-ACCUMULATION7 NOR ANY HARMFUL EFFECT ON THE ENVIRONMENT
* THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF ACCUMULATION OF POLLUTANTS
* THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT DEGRADABLE PLASTICS ENCOURAGE LITTERING
However, the report contains some very strange recommendations about oxo-biodegradable plastics in relation to recycling, composting, and other issues, which are not supported by the evidence.
The report was, prepared by four members of staff at Loughborough, none of whom are professors, and none of whom is a specialist in oxo-biodegradable technology. They state that their recommendations are their own opinions, and that their views do not necessarily reflect DEFRA policy or opinions.
Loughborough University did not do any experiments itself, and none of the Professors in other universities with specialized knowledge of oxo-biodegradable plastics were chosen to peer-review the report.
In fact, two of the three assessors of the Report are engaged in bio-based plastics, which is a totally different product, in competition with oxo-biodegradable plastic. One of them is a well known advocate of bio-based plastics, who appears from his website (www.msu.edu/~narayan/general.htm) to be connected with companies that produce bio-based plastic products.
The Oxo-biodegradable plastics industry was not given a draft of the Report before publication nor asked for its views on the “Key Findings and Recommendations.” Symphony regard this as inappropriate.

“Biodegradable” plastic bags, is it really green?
25 03 2010
D2w Biodegradable Plastic is a true solution to irresponsible plastic waste disposal
NOT TRUE
The study said these plastics have an uncertain impact on the natural environment and are neither suitable for conventional recycling methods, because of the chemical additives, nor for composting.”As these plastics cannot be composted, the term “biodegradable’ can cause confusion,” Environment Minister Dan Norris said in a statement.
“We hope this research will discourage manufacturers and retailers from claiming that these materials are better for the environment than conventional plastics,” he added.
The above statement and study was executed out by Loughborough University and funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

TRUE
On 11th March the Department for the Environment and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) of the UK Government published a Report from Loughborough University entitled “Assessing the Environmental Impacts of Oxo-degradable Plastics Across their Life-cycle.”
A detailed response has been prepared by Symphony Environmental Technologies Plc., a British public company quoted on the London Stock Exchange, developing and supplying Oxo-biodegradable plastic technology under its d2w trademark in 92 countries worldwide. (And us, J-Trend Systems, is the authorized distributor of d2w in Asia)
The Loughborough Report has confirmed that oxo-biodegradable plastics:

* There is no evidence of accumulation of pollutants
* There is no evidence that degradable plastics encourage littering
However, Symphony believes that the Report contains some very strange recommendations about oxo-biodegradable plastics in relation to recycling, composting, and other issues, which are not supported by the evidence.
The report was prepared by four members of staff at Loughborough, none of whom are professors, and none of whom is a specialist in oxo-biodegradable technology. They state that their recommendations are their own opinions, and that their views do not necessarily reflect DEFRA policy or opinions.

As an authorized distributor for d2w additives in Asia, I would really love to conclude that:
“d2wTM controlled-life plastic are products with proven oxo-biodegradable technology. Before d2wTM oxo-biodegradable plastic starts to degrade, it is as good as ordinary plastic for strength, sealability, printability, and clarity; when it starts to degrade, it does not release methan or toxicity – withouting causing harm and disposal problem to the environment.”
At least, we are confident to say that d2w biodegradable technology is a great invention to prevent/cure irresponsible plastic waste disposal problem, because they are able to breakdown in any environement when oxygen is present.

Inditex-a fasion distribution group
that is among the most important in the world. Its main characteristics are customer orientation and vertical integration that deals with all phases of the fashion business from design up to sales in its own stores including manufacture and logistics. In 2007, its sales stood at 9.435 billion euros, 15% more than the previous year. Its net profit grew by 25%, up to 1.25 billion euros. The Inditex group is comprised of seven commercial formats.
Sustainable Inditex- ‘d2w’ plastic bags
The sustainable store is one of the most important projects that Inditex has initiated. It is not only important that the store is a key element in the Inditex business model but also that it involves the customer by including their participation in the company’s commitment to the environment.
Tha measures incorporated into this project in 2007 have culminated in a qualitative advances for Inditex. From this financial year on, the plastic bags ditributed in the Group’s stores will be made with ‘d2w’. These bags contain an additive that makes them degradable, accelerating the total decomposition process in a natural way over an average period of one to two years as opposed to more than 400 for conventional plastic. The initiative has also been extended to other parts of the company, such as the internal magazine that incorporated the ‘d2w’ additives in it packaging.
ADVANTAGES OF DEGRADABLE PLASTIC
-It reduces the degradation time.
-It turns into water, carbondioxide and biomass.
-It doesn’t need to be buried to biodegrade.
-It needs less raw materials for its production.
-It retains the properties of conventional plastic like being resistant and waterprood.
All the plastic bags used in Inditex chains bear the ‘d2w’ certification stamp. During the 2008 financial year, the Group’s aim is to introduce the use to certified ecological paper to the paper bags.

What is d2w®?
d2w® is a low cost additive for polyethylene and polypropylene which causes the plastic to break down into a biodegradable form (the long plastic chains break down into shorter chains which can then be accessed by micro organisms which break them down to carbon dioxide and water.
Every 1Kg of d2w® additive to produce degradable plastics, you save 0.206 tons carbon footprint.

A Gutful of Plastic!
If all plastics are made degradable, marine lives can save more.
Floating rubbish, such as plastic, can be easily swallowed, and since it cannot be digested or passed, it stays in the whale. Plastic in the gut can prevent the animal from digesting its food and may lead to death.
In August 2000, an 8 metre Bryde s (pronounced broodas ) whale stranded close to central Cairns in north Queensland. It died soon after. An autopsy found that the whale s stomach was tightly packed with plastic – almost 6 square metres of it! The whale had swallowed supermarket bags, food packaging, three large sheets of plastic 2 metres long and fragments of garbage bags.
Please be careful with your rubbish
A plastic bag dropped in the street washes into stormwater drains which empty into the ocean. If you see plastic in the street, don t let it become whale food – pick it up!
