Go Go Green with the Dog

12 05 2010

Dogs may not be immediately concerned with saving the earth but today’s dog owners should find themselves engaging in “Green Responsibility” and choosing biodegradable/eco-friendly pet products.

scoopthe_poop

Going green isn’t just for people. Dogs as well as dog owners can help protect the environment we all share. With health concerns like cancer and environmental issues such as pollution, climate change, global warming, land degradation, ozone depletion, resource depletion, and waste disposal plaguing the earth, concerned citizens are making the effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Many of these concerned citizens are dog owners.

According to the American Pet Product Manufacturers Association, there were 74.8 million dogs listed in the National Pet Owners Survey of 2008-2009. That many dogs can make a significant impact on the environment. It only makes sense that pet owners include their furry family members in lifestyle changes that protect health and the planet we live on. A few tips can have dogs happily going green.

  • Have pets spayed or neutered. Pet overpopulation takes up valuable resources and contributes to pollution.
  • Adopt pets from a shelter. Those who want a specific breed can find just what they’re looking for at a breed rescue.
  • Pick up after the dog, using paper or biodegradable poop bags. Never use plastic which does not break down in the landfill.
  • Feed dogs organic pet food that is free of hormones and chemicals that may be toxic to the canine body.
  • Recycle household materials for bedding. Some of the family’s old blankets or towels work well as do old pillow slips stuffed with foam packaging peanuts.
  • Pay attention to packaging of pet items. Recycled, biodegradable, or none is best.
  • Use shampoos and other grooming products that are free of phosphates, sulfates, and other chemicals that can be harmful to the environment.

While many dog owners are responsible, many still do not clear up their dog’s mess which can be a problem to others. When the shear numbers of dogs are taken into account, we can see the potential scale of the problem in various regions:

  • 4 million tons – It is estimated that dog owners do not collect over 4 million tons of dog waste annually.
  • There are an estimated 66 million dogs in the USA

Reasons to pick it up? Let’s see below:

“I don’t understand why people don’t pick up their own dog’s poop. It’s not right! In order to have a clean park for you, your pet  and other community members to enjoy, it needs to be clean! You should always pick up your dog’s poop, especially when poop bags are readily available at the park.”—-quote from a responsible pet owner

1. For reasons of good hygiene, risks to human health and to comply with many laws related to dog fowling.

2. Many world Governments are reducing the use of plastic bags as they can be harmful to the environment. As a result, many shops and retailers no longer provide free plastic bags, and some companies charge money for plastic bags.

3. 20-30% of all pollutants in waterways attributed to dog waste – Pollutants originating from rainwater run-off via sewer systems, and dogs pooping near watersheds or
beaches. Overall, it is believed dog waste is third or fourth on the list of contributors to bacteria in contaminated waters.

4. 4th highest generated waste – Plastics are the fourth highest generated waste in the U.S., originate from petroleum which is non-renewable, do not biodegrade, and take hundred of years to break down naturally.

5.  Plastics are the least recycled with a 6.9% recovery rate. In 2006, the U.S. produced 29.5 million tons of plastic and only recycled 2.04 tons.

Above are already quite a few reasons why you should use dog poop bag (it is even better to use biodegradable ones)

RESPONSE TO THE LOUGHBOROUGH REPORT ON OXO-DEGRADABLE PLASTICS FROM SYMPHONY ENVIRONMENTAL

23 04 2010

Symphony Environmental defends oxo-degradable plastics

On 11th March the Department for the Environment and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) of the UK Government published a Report from Loughborough University entitled “Assessing the Environmental Impacts of Oxo-degradable Plastics Across their Life-cycle.”

A detailed response has been prepared by Symphony Environmental Technologies, a British public company quoted on the London Stock Exchange, developing and supplying Oxo-biodegradable plastic technology under its d2w trademark. The Loughborough Report has confirmed that oxo-biodegradable plastics:

* DO DEGRADE ABIOTICALLY IN A NORMAL ENVIRONMENT

* DO DEGRADE ABIOTICALLY UNDER ELEVATED TEMPERATURES IN LANDFILL

* DO BIODEGRADE

* DO NOT EMIT METHANE EVEN DEEP IN LANDFILL

* ARE SAFE FOR FOOD CONTACT

* CONTAIN NO HEAVY METALS

The report has also confirmed that:

* PRO-DEGRADANT ADDITIVES ARE NOT HARMFUL AND HAVE NO NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT IN THE PRODUCTION AND USE PHASE

* THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF BIO-ACCUMULATION7 NOR ANY HARMFUL EFFECT ON THE ENVIRONMENT

* THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF ACCUMULATION OF POLLUTANTS

* THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT DEGRADABLE PLASTICS ENCOURAGE LITTERING

However, the report contains some very strange recommendations about oxo-biodegradable plastics in relation to recycling, composting, and other issues, which are not supported by the evidence.

The report was, prepared by four members of staff at Loughborough, none of whom are professors, and none of whom is a specialist in oxo-biodegradable technology. They state that their recommendations are their own opinions, and that their views do not necessarily reflect DEFRA policy or opinions.

Loughborough University did not do any experiments itself, and none of the Professors in other universities with specialized knowledge of oxo-biodegradable plastics were chosen to peer-review the report.
In fact, two of the three assessors of the Report are engaged in bio-based plastics, which is a totally different product, in competition with oxo-biodegradable plastic. One of them is a well known advocate of bio-based plastics, who appears from his website (www.msu.edu/~narayan/general.htm) to be connected with companies that produce bio-based plastic products.

The Oxo-biodegradable plastics industry was not given a draft of the Report before publication nor asked for its views on the “Key Findings and Recommendations.” Symphony regard this as inappropriate.

“Biodegradable” plastic bags, is it really green?

25 03 2010

D2w Biodegradable Plastic is a true solution to irresponsible plastic waste disposal

Recently I was reading an article that really shocked me -  Then, after reasearching for the lies and truths, I would like to share this information and hopefully can get some comments on it.

NOT TRUE

Some people claimed that Plastic bags that are advertised as degradable and sold in many supermarkets may not be as environmentally friendly.  Such bags usually use “oxo-degradable” plastics which include small amounts of additives to make them degrade faster.

The study said these plastics have an uncertain impact on the natural environment and are neither suitable for conventional recycling methods, because of the chemical additives, nor for composting.”As these plastics cannot be composted, the term “biodegradable’ can cause confusion,” Environment Minister Dan Norris said in a statement.

“We hope this research will discourage manufacturers and retailers from claiming that these materials are better for the environment than conventional plastics,” he added.

The above statement and study was executed out by Loughborough University and funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

TRUE

The below report is the response to the above Loughborough Report on Oxo-Degradable Plastics From Symphony Environmental Technologies Plc

On 11th March the Department for the Environment and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) of the UK Government published a Report from Loughborough University entitled “Assessing the Environmental Impacts of Oxo-degradable Plastics Across their Life-cycle.”

(And us, J-Trend Systems, is the authorized distributor of d2w in Asia)

The Loughborough Report has confirmed that oxo-biodegradable plastics:
    * Do degrade abiotically in a normal environment
    * Do degrade abiotically under elevated temperatures in landfill
    * Do biodegrade
    * Do not emit methane even deep in landfill
    * Are safe for food contact

The report has also confirmed that:

    * Pro-degradant additives are not harmful and have no negative
environmental impact in the production and use phase
    * There is no evidence of bio-accumulation nor any harmful effect

As an authorized distributor for d2w additives in Asia, I would really love to conclude that:

“d2wTM controlled-life plastic are products with proven oxo-biodegradable technology. Before d2wTM oxo-biodegradable plastic starts to degrade, it is as good as ordinary plastic for strength, sealability, printability, and clarity; when it starts to degrade, it does not release methan or toxicity – withouting causing harm and disposal problem to the environment.”

We all have basic understanding that ordinary plastic bags and packaging can take up to 400 years to degrade!  When plastic bags are improperly discarded, they remain scattered in our bushes, our trees, on our roads, in our rivers and seas, killing live animals and causing great damage to the environment.

At least, we are confident to say that d2w biodegradable technology  is a great invention to prevent/cure irresponsible plastic waste disposal problem, because they are able to breakdown in any environement when oxygen is present.

Oxo-biodegradable plastic products made with d2w technology are available in over 60 countries worldwide and are distributed in shops, supermarkets and retail stores who are committed to preserving the environment.

Some Quick Facts About Regular Plastic Bags

23 02 2010

If you’re looking for information about plastic bags we’re one of your sources for these and other compelling facts It’s the kind of information that inspired our few in the beginning -and now millions of others- to take action on this urgent issues.

Our ever-dreaming  goal and target is have influence, to educate,  to inform, to act, to impact, and finally to change our daily lives in using non-responsible plastics (that means, should we stop and think the plastics that we are using everyday, are they good to the environment?)  Many, countless lives and inconvenience are causing great damage to our nature because of the convenience of the plastics that brings to us, now, should we be thankful and start to act / prevent further harm before it is too late?

Many are listening, and some are acting, and we would like to share some of the facts below so we can influence you a bit.

1. Regular plastic bags take decades to degrade, so, they are just piling up and up.  However, it is not a good idea to ban plastic bags (http://www.biodeg.org/position-papers/Plastic-bag-bans/?domain=biodeg.org)

2. The answer is to make all short-life plastics with Symphony’s d2w Controlled-life technology.  They will be just as strong as ordinary plastics, and they cost very little more, but they will automatically self – destruct if they have not been recycled during their useful life.

3. d2w plastics do not just fragment, because d2w technology reduces the molecular weight to the point where the material is no longer a plastic, and can be bioassimilated by naturally-occurring micro-organisms.

4.  Ordinary plastics and d2w plastics are made from by-products of oil, natural gas or coal.  The by-products will arise so long as the world needs these fuels, and it makes good environmental sense to use it, instead of using land and water resources to produce paper, cotton, or vegetable-based plastics.

5. d2w plastics can be recycled if collected during their useful life (see http://www.biodeg.org/position-papers/recycling/?domain=biodeg.org)

6. Many countries throughout the world (see http://www.biodeg.org/legislation/) have imposed an “eco-tax” on regular plastic bags. Biodegradable plastics get exemption or a lower rate.

7.  Plastic bags made with d2w technology are a much better option than vegetable-based plastic (see http://www.biodeg.org/position-papers/comparison/?domain=biodeg.org)

8. It is estimated that ordinary plastic kills 1 million sea birds, 100,000 sea mammals and countless fish each year.

9. Turtles, dolphins and killer whales can choke or starve by confusing plastic bags for jellyfish. See the devastating effects plastic bags have on the environment.

10. Plastic bags made with d2w would not survive long enough to reach the ocean garbage patches.

How Long Does It Take For Other Products To Biodegrade?

Here’s how long it takes for some commonly used products to biodegrade, after they are disposed of:

Cotton rags————————————1-5 months
Paper——————————————–2-5 months
Rope———————————————3-14 months
Orange peels———————————-6 months
Wool socks————————————-1-5 years
Cigarette butts——————————–1-12 years
Plastic coated paper milk cartons———-5 years
Leather shoes———————————25-40 years
Nylon fabric————————————30-40 years
Tin cans—————————————–50-100 years
Aluminium cans——————————–80-100 years
Plastic 6-pack holder rings——————450 years
Glass bottles———————————–1 million years
Plastic bottles———————————-Forever

Why we care? See the Impact On the Wildlife

Turtle eating a plastic bagThe real impact of plastic bag litter affects wildlife both in the marine environment and in rural areas. Tens of thousands of whales, birds, seals and turtles are killed every year from plastic bag litter in the marine environment as they often mistake plastic bags for food such as jellyfish. Plastic bags, once ingested, cannot be digested or passed by an animal so it stays in their stomachs. Plastic in an animal’s digestive tract can prevent food digestion and can lead to a very slow and painful death. In the case of biodegradable plastic bags, the bags would disolve in water after a short time, while those bags that would be swallowed by marine animals, the animals’ digestive fluids would dissolve the biodegradable plant additive, therefore breaking the bag up into little pieces, which the animal could later pass naturally. As plastic bags can take up to 1000 years to break down, once an animal dies and decays after ingesting plastic, the plastic is then freed back into the marine environment to carry on killing other wildlife! Turtles have also been rescued with plastic bags lodged in their throat – and part of the bag hanging out of their mouth. The turtle pictured above was found and rescued by a senior staff member of Melbourne (Australia) Zoo while they were out doing fieldwork.

FOR A GREENER SOLUTION:  Changing Habit by Converting Normal Plastic Products to Oxo-Biodegradable Plastics

I have to admit, before entering this eco-green industry, I had no sense at all for any green awareness.  Now I have successfully became a promoter of green products and is also a proud user of them.  I do encounter many difficulties when promoting this idea or information to many plastic manufacturers.  Mostly they will consider the “added-on costs” before the responsible green results that could bring by converting normal plastics to oxo-biodegradable plastics.  Of course I can understand they do have their own consideration when green action could also become a burden on their costs of the products.  That’s why, we are aggressively are educating customers that although we cannot reduce possible costs, however by using d2w oxo-biodegradable plastic products is the #1 solution that’s most cost-effective and efficient that are available on the market right now.  Just with little add-on costs to your normal plastics, the d2w technology can shorten the degradation time from up to 400 years to as little as 6 months – 5 years, safely and gracefully, under any oxidized environment (this means, as long as it is under any condition that has oxygen) .

Act “Green” requires not only you and me, it also flows back up to the suppliers, the manufacturers of the plastic industry.  It will be really making good result to our environment when everybody, each one of us, can act and contribute together.

So, for numerous plastic suppliers out there in the markets, we really need to work together to promote d2w oxo-biodegradable plastic products, for everyday use. And as for final users like you and me, we are all stakeholder taking part of this, we are all linked and are responsible for promoting & using eco-friendly products.

And a quick overview of our company which I admire so much:

J-Trend Systems Co., Ltd. represents d2w oxo-biodegradable plastic technology in Asia (China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Japan, Korea) and is the only company offering oxo-biodegradable plastics end product and semi-finished product in this huge and emerging market; integrating the total green supply chain with product quality and cost competitiveness. The company offers a wide range of oxo-biodegradable plastic products, covering from rigid packaging to most of the flexible packaging available in the market and our company is based in Taoyuan county, Taiwan with factories and offices in China and Hong Kong.

And d2w is an additives that are added to the plastics at their extrusion stage and this d2w additive is developed by the Symphony Environmental based in UK.  And we are the only authorized distributor in Asia for the d2w technology for plastic products.  Without doubt we are able to provide the all ranges of oxi-bio packaging products

 Finally, are you in?

Masafi introduces Oxo Biodegradable shrink-wraps for New packaging

13 10 2009

J-Trend Systems Co., Ltd. we are proudly being as a member of Biodegradable Plastics Association and supply degradable plastics in Asia (Taiwan, China, Vietnam)

Oct. 11, 2009 (Al Bawaba) — Masafi – one of the region’s leading FMCG brands – has introduced Oxo Biodegradable films in its shrink-wrap packaging for water bottles. Masafi is the first company in the food and beverage sector across the Middle East to launch the Oxo Biodegradable packaging.

The launch of Oxo-Biodegradable films, expected to completely revolutionise the food packaging in the region, is a major step in Masafi’s Carbon Action Plan – a key initiative aimed at reducing the carbon footprint in the UAE by cutting down on the carbon emissions from its manufacturing unit, product offerings, systems as well as services.

The new Oxo-Biodegradable films, the next step in the eco-friendly plan, offer an unparalleled alternative to conventional plastic wraps, which pose a major challenge to the environment and the eco-system.

The conventional shrink-wraps are not degradable, and can take up to 400 years to break down. However, the Oxo Biodegradable films degrade, then biodegrade, on land or at sea, in the light or the dark, in heat or cold, in whatever timescale required, leaving no fragments, no methane and no harmful residues.

The Oxo-Biodegradable films disappear in all types of environment and the degradation causes no harm to the eco-system.

They can be recycled or incinerated, are more stronger and versatile compared to conventional plastics, have useful applications in agriculture and horticulture, have no genetically-modified ingredients and are safe for direct food contact.

Ms Natascha Edelmann, Head of Marketing at Masafi, said: “The new shrink-wraps on our Masafi bottles are totally environmentally preferable, sustainable alternative to current materials and have been comprehensively tried, tested and proven safe for food products.

The bitter truth is that over 60% of litter on beaches is plastic and over 46,000 pieces of plastic debris float on every square mile on our earth’s oceans – facts such as these have made us step-up our R&D processes furthering our resolve to reduce harmful non-degradable plastic waste. Along with our corporate recycling service started last year that enables UAE companies to recycle all their plastic bottles at no extra cost – we are consciously reducing / recycling the packaging that Masafi produces.”

She added: “The new packaging is part of Masafi’s endeavour to be a leader in all aspects of its business – be its products, innovation, technology, environmental initiatives or supporting government initiatives. To be introduced in our 1.5 litre bottles in the initial stage, the packaging will be extended to our 500ml bottles and flavoured water bottles at a later stage – all these at no extra cost to our consumers.”

The Oxo Biodegradable films encompass a tiny amount of pro-degradant additive, which is introduced into the manufacturing process to change the behaviour of the plastic. Degradation begins when the programmed-service life is over (as controlled by the additive composition) and the product is no longer required. In Masafi’s case it is planned for 2yrs. This makes it more environmental friendly and reduces plastic litter substantially.

As part of its commitment to safeguard the environment, Masafi launched the Corporate Recycling Initiative in October 2008, where it collects plastic bottles from UAE-based companies employing 200-plus people for recycling purposes.

The bottles are sent to Fujairah for recycling into non-food plastic applications.

The company has signed up 89x partners for the initiative and has dedicated a toll free number 800 5455 to facilitate the recycling process. Over 437 metric tonnes of water bottles have been collected till date and the redemption rate for 4G Bottles is currently at 34% — reflecting the eco-awareness among Masafi customers.

Masafi, the first mineral water company in the region to be awarded the prestigious ISO 14001 certification for Environmental Management, also won the Idea of the Year award for its environmental initiative at the Ideas.Arabia International Conference held in April 2009.

In other initiatives on the environment front, the company launched the Brown Carton Box last year – a revolutionary new packaging concept which significantly reduced the amount of corrugated carton used in terms of grammage and coverage. Masafi also installed energy-efficient non-CFC chillers at its bottling plant in RAK as a major step towards safeguarding the environment.

The company has signed up with UN Global Compact – the world’s most influential network for socially and environmentally responsible businesses – to play a proactive role in ecologically sustainable issues.© 2009 Al Bawaba (www.albawaba.com)
